During the '90s, Jack Black hopped from movie set to movie set, landing small parts in both popular and not-so-popular films. The list includes Demolition Man, Waterworld, Dead Man Walking, The Cable Guy, The Jackal, and the Will Smith vehicle, Enemy of the State. When Black wasn't perfecting his acting skills, he was at band practice, cultivating the spoof duo Tenacious D, which he fronts.
The comedy High Fidelity with John Cusack provided Black with the breakthrough performance of his career in 2000. He finally received a more prominent role and he shone -- even as a singer in the film. His roles were increasingly more significant from them on, as he was great in Saving Silverman and became a leading man in Shallow Hal (both in 2001). Just as Tenacious D had real hits with "Wonderboy" and "Tribute," Black continued on his successful run with Orange County, Ice Age and, most notably, 2003's The School of Rock.
The comedian was front and center in the bomb, Envy, and then provided the voice of Lenny in Shark Tale, but his projects in 2004 were merely a prelude to bigger things. In 2005, he starred in the big budget, Peter Jackson-directed remake of King Kong. He follows this with his own Tenacious D movie, as well as two big films in 2006, Nacho libre and Master of Space and Time.
