Williams began performing stand-up comedy in 1990, five years before graduating from Alabama State University in 1995. After college Williams moved to Los Angeles where he landed small roles in the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor and First Kid. Since then, he has had guest roles on many sitcoms, including The Bernie Mac Show.
Doug Williams has served as host and executive producer of "Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-up" for the past four seasons.
Williams is currently co-writing his own TV sitcom titled Domestic Doug. The show centers around protagonist "Doug Salter", a stand-up comedian trying to make it in Hollywood not unlike Williams himself.
Doug Williams gained internet notoriety in 2006 when a clip of him at a 2003 Roasting of Emmitt Smith surfaced on the internet. Williams focused almost solely on Shaquille O'Neal who was one of the several panelists at the show. As well as Shaquille O'Neal, Williams also addresses the topic of skinny women but fails to focus on Emmitt Smith who was the honoree. Within a few minutes of Williams' routine Jamie Foxx, who was MC'ing begins interrupting his poorly received material, firstly by pretending to laugh very loudly at a joke and then by speaking into a microphone attached to his lapel whilst pretending to be Williams' conscience. After being unexpectedly accompanied by Jamie Foxx for about two minutes, Williams remains cheerful but wishes well Emmitt Smith and leaves the stage. Rather confoundedly, while Williams is returning to his seat, Foxx refers to him as "Doug Christie" instead of Doug Williams. As the clip ends, Williams can be seen with a perturbed expression on his face.
